Journal of Hospital Librarianship, a peer reviewed journal that considers all aspects of hospital/clinical librarianship, seeks original contributions to the column, Specialty of the House.  First time authors and international contributions are especially welcomed. 


"Specialty" columns can apply to almost anything - a special service or product, specialization or innovation in information services to medical personnel, special library settings, special people, etc.  


Manuscripts should be 8 to 10 pages in length, double spaced, no abstract.  Photos, graphics, tables etc. are encouraged.  More detailed instructions to authors regarding citing sources, etc. available upon request.

About the ICADL Conference

The International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL) series is a significant forum for digital libraries research, providing an opportunity for researchers, educators, and practitioners to share their experiences. Since its first meeting in Hong Kong (ICADL 1998) the ICADL has rotated annually among the Asia-Pacific countries, and evolved to become one of the premiere conferences in digital libraries.

Topics

The emergence of social media and the availability of social networking platforms offer enormous opportunity to leverage them for “connecting with the user community” and building a strong networked community of stakeholders across the life cycle of information creation to consumption. The ICADL 2013 will focus on the tools, methods, processes and case studies of “Social Media and Community networks’ that advance the field of digital libraries. We solicit papers on the theme of Social Media and Community Networks for potential publication in ICADL 2013. Areas of interest include, but are not restricted to, the following:

Submission Instructions

Papers submitted to ICADL 2013 should not be under review for any other conference or journal. A paper should be significantly different from previously published work, and should represent original contributions. Duplicate submissions will be rejected. If you have questions about how this policy applies to your work, please feel free to send an email to the General Chair or Program Committee Chairs.

Authors who wish to submit papers to ICADL 2013 should register their paper and submit an abstract as per the deadlines given in the Important Dates section. Papers for which abstracts have not been registered by the due date will be rejected. Authors may choose among three formats: full papers, short papers and posters. Papers in all these formats will be included in the proceedings and will be presented at the conference. All submissions will be rigorously peer-reviewed.

Full papers are expected to report on mature work, or on efforts that have reached an important milestone. They must not exceed 10 pages including references and appendices.

Short papers can highlight efforts that might be in an early stage, but are important for the community to be aware of. They can also present theories or systems that can be described concisely in the limited space. They must not exceed 4 pages in all.

Posters can be used for presentation of late-breaking results in an informal, interactive manner. Poster proposals must not exceed 2 pages.

All contributions must be written in English and must follow Springer's formatting guidelines (http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). Papers are to be submitted via the ICADL 2013 EasyChair page (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icadl2013). All accepted papers will be published by Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science series as conference proceedings. At least one author from each paper must register for the main conference and present their work during the conference.

Special Issue Call for Papers:
Cataloging & Classification Quarterly

ISBD: Content Bibliographic Standard


Cataloging & Classification Quarterly
is currently seeking manuscripts for a special issue devoted to the evaluation and adoption of ISBD: International Standard Bibliographic Description, consolidated edition, published in 2011.

Submissions for this special issue should describe critical and even controversial argumentative opinions related to the ISBD as a content bibliographic standard. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • ISBD and its relevance to the Universal Bibliographic Control
  • ISBD and FRBR, or consolidated FR family of models
  • Implementation and use for special types of resources
  • ISBD and metadata schemes and formats: interoperability and sustainability
  • ISBD and its relevance to publishing sector: ISBD and RDA/ONIX Framework
  • Publishing ISBD in RDF
  • ISBD and its impact on publishing bibliographic metadata as linked open data
  • Critical analysis of the survey on the use of the ISBD
  • Positioning of the ISBD in future developments of library information infrastructure (Is there a future for the ISBD?)

Call for contributions

The Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) announces a special issue on ethics to be guest edited by Deborah Halsted, Senior Associate Director, Operations of Texas Medical Center Library.  The articles in this issue will consist of full length papers, systematic reviews, case studies or research reports and/or brief communications. For guidelines and descriptions of the types of  articles including full-length papers, brief communications and case studies, please see the Information for Authors. Be advised, that these will be research papers, not opinion pieces.

The purpose of this ASIST pre-conference research symposium is to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines social broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines technology broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations.

This year, as we observe the 10th year since the passing of Rob Kling, we are particularly interested in papers that advance social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding. We are interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposiums theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium.
This years conference theme is Beyond the Cloud: Rethinking Information Boundaries. In keeping with this theme, the symposium theme is the social informatics of information boundaries. We are soliciting work that focuses on the critical analysis of the concept of information boundaries and boundary work from a Social Informatics perspective. Questions motivating the research could include (but are not limited to):
- What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of information boundaries, boundary crossing, and boundary work?
- What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain information boundaries and boundary work?
- How do the social, technological, and informational boundaries evolve and shape each other?
- How and to what extent can we enhance our understanding of information boundaries by drawing on sociological, organizational, and other social science theories?
The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2012 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience.

Deadlines:
August 9, 2013: Submit a short paper (2000 words), a poster (500 words), or a panel (1000 words) by email to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba@indiana.edu) and Pnina Fichman (fichman@indiana.edu).

HICSS 2014 Minitrack: Crowdsourcing content production and online knowledge repositories January 6-9, 2014 Big Island, Hawaii, USA

 Track: Digital and social media

 
We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper to the Crowdsourcing mini-track for HICSS 2014 taking place at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii from Jan. 6-9th, 2014.

 In line with the track emphasis on promoting digital and social-media-related research, this minitrack aims to expand the scope of research in HICSS and bring to the conference researchers interested in cutting edge topics involving socio-technical issues of mass knowledge production and crowdsourcing online knowledge repositories. As various forms of collaboration are enabled (and constrained) by the affordances available in social media, researchers are investigating a range of issues including:

1) the diverse ways in which people collaborate to create, manage, curate and manipulate online content and how these activities affect digital repositories;

2) how those who manage these repositories are responding to the dynamics of online co-creation of content;

3) the dynamics of crowdsourced online collaborations and online communities of practice; and

4) the ways in which we can best describe the socio-technical interaction networks that facilitate and inhibit mass knowledge production.

In this mini track we are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Papers of interest will examine communities of online knowledge repositories such as YouTube, Yahoo!Answers, Wikipedia, and others and may address in this context topics such as:

. The socio-technical dynamics of crowdsourcing and mass knowledge production sites . Vandalism and trolling in online mass knowledge production sites . Conflict and cooperation in content production sites . Issues of gender in collaborative content production sites . Global, cross-cultural and international aspects of content production and online intercultural collaborations in online content creation communities . Managing ethics in online mass knowledge production communities . Building, maintaining and ending social relationships on online repositories sites . Social question answering and collaborative information seeking behaviors . Challenges and opportunities of digital curation . Standards and quality of digital content online
